At the scene

Take a breath. Work through these in order.

Make sure you're safe. Move off the road if you can. Turn on hazards. If anyone's hurt, call 911.

Don't admit fault. Stick to the facts — the adjuster determines fault from the full picture later.

Photograph everything. All damage angles, license plates, the scene, road signs, any injuries.

Exchange info with the other driver. Name, phone, insurance company, policy #, plate. A photo of their license is easiest.

Witness contact info if anyone saw it. Names and phone numbers.

File a police report if there's injury, significant damage, or it was a hit-and-run.
